Toby Perkins Welcomes a Budget for Stability and Opportunity

 (15 March 2008)

Toby Perkins, Labour Party Parliamentary candidate for Chesterfield, has welcomed the Chancellor’s Budget as a commitment to economic stability, opportunity and security for all.

The 2008 Budget set out key measures to help lift 250,000 children out of poverty, and an extra boost of £50 to over 60’s households and £100 for over 80’s households on top of the Winter Fuel Payment.

Toby says: “The 2008 Budget is great news for pensioners, families and children.

“Pensioners across Britain will receive extra help to pay their heating bills. Locally this will benefit 20,670 people in Chesterfield.

“And 11,200 families in Chesterfield will gain from the increases in Child Benefit.

“The Budget’s focus on tackling climate change and child poverty will help our society today and in the future. Under Labour, we have had 10 years of economic stability and growth. This Budget will build upon this success.”

The Budget is "great news for pensioners, families and children", says Toby

Your Life, Your Say

Chesterfield Labour Party is asking young people how we can make Chesterfield a better place to live, study and work.

We have launched a new online consultation aimed at young people, called 'Your Life, Your Say.' An online survey will form just one part of a wide consultation over the coming months and years to engage with young people.

Labour's Youth Officer, Scott Lomax, says: "I am really keen to hear from as many young people as possible as to how we can make Chesterfield and Britain a better place for young people. That is why I have launched this consultation and would urge people to make their thoughts known. I'll make sure that Government ministers are made aware of what young people in Chesterfield want."

Labour Derbyshire County Council retains top rating

(21 December 2007)

Government watchdogs have awarded Labour controlled Derbyshire County Council the highest rating in an assessment of the quality of services offered by authorities across the country.

The Audit Commission’s Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA), published on Friday 21 December 2007 has revealed the authority is “improving well” and has retained the best rating of four stars.

Inspectors found the council is “focused on providing good quality services for local people and providing good value for money”. They also said it works hard to improve areas local people have said are most important to them and has “built strong partnerships to address local challenges”.

County council leader Councillor John Williams,Labour County Councillor for Staveley South, said: “We’re proud to have maintained our record as a top performing council with a four star rating.

“We work hard to improve life for local people and offer them high quality and value-for-money services.

“This is a great result but we’re not complacent. We plan to build on this latest success by continuing to do what we do well and making every possible effort where we can to improve how, when and where we deliver services to residents.”

Giving Children the Best Start to Life

On Wednesday 12 December, the Labour Government announced its new Children's Plan which gives extra support to parents and improve play facilities for our youngest citizens. Changes will include:

  • 3,500 new or rebuilt play areas – an average of 23 in every local authority and 7 in every constituency – and 30 new adventure playgrounds in the most disadvantaged areas backed by £225 million of investment.

    • New things to do and places to go for young people – with £160 million over the next two years to kick-start our ambition of new youth facilities in every constituency. This could mean either 50 new state of the art youth centres, or 500 refurbished centres, or 2,000 smaller scale centres or mobile units.

    • Free nursery provision for the most disadvantaged two year olds - as we raise the free childcare entitlement for three and four year olds from 12 to 15 hours per week.

    • Further measures to raise school standards - including a review of the primary curriculum, a move towards “testing when ready”, greater recognition for the professionalism of teachers and more catch-up support for children falling behind.

    • More support for parents and families

Toby Perkins, Listening to Chesterfield

Chesterfield Labour Party members have selected local Councillor Toby Perkins as their choice to represent the Labour Party at the next General election.

Over 350 Chesterfield Labour Party members were involved in selecting from the 28 candidates & Cllr Perkins was elected with the overwhelming backing of the local Party receiving 76% of the vote.

Cllr Perkins represents the Rother Ward and recently set up Chesterfield Flood Victims Appeal which has so far raised around £10,000 for local victims of the floods.

He is a married Father of two children and lives in Brookside. He heads the Internet Sports Goods business, Club Rugby and represented Chesterfield and Derbyshire at Rugby.

After Saturday's selection conference Toby Perkins said: " I am really proud that so many local Party members have come out today to give me their support. They recognised that I will be best placed to really fight for the best interests of all Chesterfield people. I am anxious to ensure that Labour's tough laws on anti social behaviour are enforced with increased rigour locally."

"It's obvious that Chesterfield & Staveley have suffered from a real lack of influence since having a Liberal Democrat MP and believe that I am far better placed to attract business and Government investment into the constituency. The Labour Government's £45M investment in Junction 29A will see a massive jobs boost for the area and I will be looking to positively promote the tremendous regeneration opportunities that exist in our area."

"I will be starting a programme of 'Listening to Chesterfield' events that will give local people the opportunity to have their say and discuss their ideas about how Government policy effects us in Chesterfield with Government Ministers and myself."

Natascha Engel, MP for neighbouring North East Derbyshire was quick to add her congratulations:"I have worked closely with Toby since becoming the MP for North East Derbyshire and I'm delighted that he has accepted the Labour nomination to be our candidate at the next General Election. He has a great track record at getting things done. His local knowledge and ability will make him a great MP for Chesterfield."
